Coastal living has been cherished by all regions, both domestic and foreign. The thought of waking up and seeing just water is very attractive, and reading a book or magazine while gazing at the water is soothing to the soul. Enjoying a sunset with a companion, while watching the ebb and flow of the ocean, is like no other romantic experience. The best way to fully enjoy these experiences is a water view that is free from obstructions. For years windows and doors were simply not large enough, and this problem was compounded by new building codes requiring impact resistant glass.

Recently companies began spending more time, money and research to create better door systems to showcase water views. An innovative company, “NanaWall,” designed a large, foldable door system with openings up to 20 feet. Installing this style of door brings your outdoor living space inside. These large openings capture the incredible splendor of being outdoors and bring a Caribbean feel right to your door. Covered porches become indoor/outdoor piazzas, with a beautiful backdrop of open skies, water views and gentle breezes.

In 2010, SAGA Construction had the opportunity to install an accordian fold door system purchased from a company in Guatemala. They designed 3 foldable Mahogany doors, which met our impact resistant wind codes. These doors were installed on the top two levels of an oceanfront home we built in South Nags Head. We had to factor in that renters may leave these doors open for very long periods of time. In response, we installed a sensor on the doors, which turns off heat pumps after 5 minutes of the doors remaining open. The customer feedback from rental guests has been unbelievable. The number one focus of their comments has been the excitement of opening up an entire wall to enjoy the Atlantic … up close and personal!
