Spring Into Your Local Farm Market On The Outer Banks

Spring is right around the corner and it’s got us excited for grilling out with family and friends. The pivotal moment each year when we trade in the comfort food for lighter fare. Where salads replace soups and seafood takes the place of the roast at the dinner table.

Whether you’re vacationing on the Outer Banks, or you live here, it’s a great time to familiarize yourself with some of the best spots to snag the freshest produce in the area so that your first big cookout of the season - really, every meal - is a hit!

Here are just a few of our recommendations:

OBX Farmer’s Market - In Nags Head at MP 10.5 in the South Beach Plaza, this market is  locally-owned by the Pierce family whose goal is to make the freshest North Carolina grown local fruits and veggies accessible to our community.

Seaside Farm Market - If you’re in Corolla, the TimBuck II Shopping Center is likely a stop along the way for you. The Seaside Farm Market carries everything from fresh, seasonal produce to local seafood, cheeses and herbs. The market also boasts a nice selection of craft beers and wines and is open seven days a week during season from 8a-9p.

Green Acres Farmers Market - Run by local farming family, the Newberns, this market sells their homegrown tomatoes, melons, beans, squash, peanuts, peaches and much more including homemade jams, breads and dressings. Located in the parking lot of Dockside ‘n Duck (which the family also owns), they are open seven days a week all summer long.

Manteo Farmers Market - Showcasing everything from art and jewelry to produce and baked goods, this market is set on the waterfront next to the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum and is open Saturdays in May through early fall from 8a-12p.

Tarheel Too - Located in the Seagate North Shopping Center at MP 5.5, adjacent to the Brew Thru, this standalone produce market provides locally-sourced produce, herbs and baked goods. The stand offers competitive prices and opens in early April, remaining open thru fall every year.

Tomato Shack - Set right in the heart of Duck, this roadside stand sits between Red Sky Cafe (yum) and Roadside Grill (double yum) on the east side of Highway 12. Most items are local and come from farms in nearby counties, and some produce and herbs are grown right on the OBX. The stand also features local eggs and meats.

Morris Farm Market - What began under the shade of two pecan trees as a truck bed veggie stand has blossomed into a unique destination that is a definite must on any trip. If you’re heading down from Virginia, you’re sure to spot Morris Farm Market off of Caratoke Highway. With plenty of parking for busses and RVs, an expansive picnic area, a  this is one of our favorite stops along the way. The market sells fresh vegetables, fruits, ciders, tractor-churned ice cream, baked goods and so much more. From the craft beer on tap; to the live entertainment; to the antique tractors that adorn the property, Morris Farm Market truly offers something for everyone.
